Divemaster Internship Blog – Week 7 & 8

First of all sorry for being late again…

We had a couple of busy days and when I had day off I was totally tired to do anything.

So lets start!

Finally we could go out with boat to discover new dive sites. We were 3 of us, Adrian, Dan and me. We were at the „twin wrecks” near to Las Americas coast. It was really good to see new things. This is a known dive site for everyone but from now we also can reach it to dive. After this we went to do totally new sites. At first we found nothing interesting with Adrian but on the second one yes! The site is really close to the port of San Juan and it’s really similar to Alcalá. But you have a lot of different rock formations. For me it was like Jurassic Park in mini size 🙂

And of course the feeling that you are seeing something totally new that has (maybe) never been seen before by no one. I loved it to discover!

Here in the Canary islands we had really a lot of rain because of a tropical storm from the Atlantic ocean. Every year it happens once. It brings really a lot of rain. So.. on the days before the water started to be rough and the visibility dropped down drastically. After the storm it was worst. It was less then 3 meters. Last time when this happened with me it was at home when I dived our lake in Hungary. But day by day it started to be better.

I met one of our sites called Yellow Mountain. I liked it a lot!!! It changes so many times on the same dive. You start with rocky bottom… after sand… after really huge rocks nearly up until the surface. You have small caves on the wall with amazing life! On the way back rocky bottom again but in a different style full with living environment.

We did snorkel tours also. At first I thought it will be boring but it wasn’t. People can taste a bit the feeling of free diving and you can see the site from above. It gives you more information about how to lead a dive because you could see it from another perspective.

We had lots of try dives even with up to 4 persons at the same time. My maximum was 3 persons on my own even from the beginning (sort them out with equipment and do the theoretical lesson). It was a great challenge for me I enjoyed it.

We had an Open Water Diver course. Sadly I couldn’t be there on all dives (pool and sea sessions) because we were busy but we will have another one so on that one I can assist on the whole course.

We did 3 Advanced OWD courses with navigation, peak performance buoyancy, deep dive and wreck dives. I enjoyed them a lot.

I had my first full guide job. Sort out the kit, do the briefing and guide the dive totally alone. I was very happy when I heard that it will happen. I enjoyed it a lot and the costumer also. He enjoyed the dive he was happy and finished the dive with a smile on his face. It’s a really good feeling to earn this 🙂

On the next week will be my birthday on Tuesday (28th) so this week will be a bit special for me 🙂

And also we will have Halloween 🙂 I’m thinking of going into work with face painting (until the first dive). We are planning a night dive with costumes!! I already bought a mummy costume! It will be fun! Dan will dress like Dracula and if everything goes well Adrian will wear something too. We will have photos so I will try not to forget to upload a couple of them J

So see you after Halloween!!!

Divemaster Internship Blog – Week 6

As I said before we started with the wreck in Tabaiba. I led the dive and it was good. None of us wanted to penetrate so we just navigated around the wreck.

Tuesday was a really long day, ended with a night dive in Alcalá, it was really good! Lots of octopusses, common ray and sea hares. We had full moon again but the angle wasn’t the same than before so this time the moon didn’t give us that „special” light. But even like this the visibility was excellent. All of us enjoyed the dive. 🙂

Because Tuesday was long I needed to start later on Wednesday so I went in at 1:00pm. Dan looked at me and asked: „are you ready for today?” I said yeeees?! I didn’t know it why he asked until he said that it was exam day… I was like OMG 🙂

So we went inside finished the last knowledge review and baaaang – exam time 🙂

I started to fill the endless 120 questions. I think I spent 2 hours. For me the most difficult thing (which took a lot of time) was to understand what they asked exactly, I mean because of the translation from English to Hungarian. When I had problems Tara or Dan helped me with what they are asking.

The first 60 questions looked a bit easier and the second half was more difficult. Maybe I say this only because I was struggling more with translation in this section…

But at the end I can say that I passed!!! 🙂 –  I’m really happy because I did it for the first time without fail. I was really really nervous because of the exam.

I spent my day off with a relaxing travel to Buena Vista and Puerto de la Cruz.

I must say after the exam I feel much more relaxed and comfortable during the days at the dive center. I feel myself more useful and I like that I don’t have that feeling any more about the exam…

At the end of the week I got a special invitation/opportunity from Dan. I could try the twin-set during one deep dive. All of us went with double cylinders (Adrian, Dan and I). Adrian with normal BCD but attached with two 7 liters, Dan with side mounts and I with the twin set. I was nervous a bit because I never did it before.

We investigated another side of Marazul. It was a deep dive around 84 minutes dive time. I enjoyed it a lot!

At the beginning it was a bit strange the balancing with the twin set but after a couple of minutes I started to feel it well so after it was really good.

So on this week I did the exam and tried out new things! It was an experience full week 🙂 I liked it a lot.

The most important thing this week is that I am now starting to feel more comfortable around the center.

AND !!! this week we will go to try the new Paradise Divers RIB (zodiac) finally 🙂 So the next week looks good also 😉

See you next week with a boaty floaty blog 🙂

Divemaster Internship Blog – Week 5

Divemaster Internship Blog – Tenerife 2014-09-29 – Week 5

Finally, it looks like I started to feel better after my sickness. Looks like my new 2.5mm vest solved the problem 🙂

At the beginning of the week we finished nearly all the chapters from the Divemaster book, only one left. So I’m nearly ready to finish the theoretical knowledge and ready to do the exam with the never ending 120 questions 🙂

We also practiced skills in the pool. Reviewed old ones, learnt new ones and Dan marked me on them.

DSCF8263I’m leading more and more dives and I am also doing the Discover Scuba Dive theory session and also teach/demonstrate skills in the pool. I enjoy it a lot because after the pool session you can see how much they enjoyed in the ocean. DSCF8130

One older man came to do this, he enjoyed a lot and after he saw the video about himself he was close to crying :-). It’s always good to see/feel that you helped give someone an experience they will never forget. Doesn’t matter how old they are…

With Dan we did Search and Recovery in Marazul. I enjoyed it a lot!!! It was good to do something different.

DSCF8222The regular dive sites are now getting easier to lead and I now recognize them better!
The next week we will start in Tabaiba with a deep wreck dive. I will lead it for first time 🙂
I’m a bit excited! It will be good.

Looks like from the beginning of November we will have another Divemaster trainee.

Ah and finally the Zodiac is technically totally ready for use! The only things left are the paper works. Sadly here it goes a bit slowly… BUT the longer you have to wait the better it will be when you can do them 🙂

See you next week!
